Dental Implant Complications

Dental Implants are foreign bodies and need to be maintained and cleaned on a regular basis. Regular home care and dental visits to a dentist are recommended to prevent complications. Trauma from the bite, bacterial plaque, remaining cement, and/or surgical mistakes are common causes of implant complications and failures. If you have a history of gum disease, your implants are at higher risk of periimplantitis (bone loss around implant) and infection.

Treatment of periodontal diseases has to be performed before any dental implant placement to prevent complications. Recession on the implant and showing of the metal abutment is a common aesthetic complication in an aesthetic area which can be treated with gum grafting procedures.

At our office we perform a thorough evaluation and treatment planning before dental implant placement. The pictures show the result of gum grafting procedure which has been performed to cover the metal abutment of the implant.
